Why Does My Car Shudder When Braking?

If your car shudders when braking in the Mount Pocono, Scranton, and Stroudsburg areas, the four most common reasons are:

1. Warped Brake Rotors

If you have disc brakes, as most cars do, your brakes have a thick, round, flat piece of steel on the inside of the wheel called a rotor. When you brake, your brake pads clamp down around the spinning rotors, creating friction that brings your car to a stop.

Your rotor is designed to dissipate the heat that comes from that friction, but that may lead them to warp over time. When that happens, your brake pad will slip when pressed against the rotor and may cause your car to shudder. At this point, you will probably need to have your brake rotors replaced.

2. Worn Brake Pads

As we've mentioned, your car stops by squeezing your brake pads against your rotors, creating friction. Eventually, this heat and friction will cause the material on your brake pads to wear down-in fact, that's exactly what they're designed for.

When the material wears down, the brake pads' metal backing begins to scrape against the rotor, at which point you may hear a squeaking sound. This can warp your rotors and even cause a pulsing sensation when you hit the brake pedal. Have your brake pads replaced as soon as possible to avoid further damage to your braking system, and have your rotors inspected as well.

3. Unbalanced Or Uneven Tires

Even new tires aren't perfectly rounded. Due to this, they have weight imbalances that need to be counteracted during installation by applying weights strategically to the walls of your tires. Over time, the weights may shift, causing your tires to become unbalanced. At this point, you may experience vibrations when braking, or you may even feel your car shuddering while driving. Fix this by having your tires balanced.

4. Uneven Tire Wear

Another tire-related issue that may make your car shudder is uneven wear. Your tires wear down with use, but they don't all wear down evenly. For example, front-wheel drive cars will probably experience faster wear on their front tires than their rear tires. If your tires are uneven, your car may shudder while driving. Worn tire tread can also cause your car to shudder when braking. Avoid uneven wear by having your tires rotated regularly.
