Chevy Colorado Towing Capacity Mount Pocono PA

Chevy Colorado Towing Capacity

When our customers in the Mount Pocono, Scranton, and Stroudsburg areas ask us about the Chevrolet Colorado towing capacity, the quick answer is that the ZR2 trim can tow up to 5,000 pounds, while every other trim can tow up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped.

However, the team at Ray Price Chevrolet knows that this midsize truck actually features a full range of towing capacities, depending on the powertrain you're working with during your drives around East Stroudsburg and Tobyhanna.

It also depends on whether you're equipped with the Z82 Trailer Package, which includes a trailer hitch and 7-pin connector. Keep reading to learn more about the many other factors that affect your Chevy Colorado towing capacity.

Chevy Colorado Engine Specs

The Chevy truck makes three engines available, each with their own maximum towing capacity. The standard engine is a 2.5L I-4 engine that generates 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque. With this engine under the hood, you can tow a maximum of 3,500 pounds, which is enough to trailer the standard dirt bike.

For double the towing capacity, you can upgrade to the 3.6L V6 engine that maxes out your power at 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. With this engine, you can pull up to 7,000 pounds when properly equipped.

To fully maximize your towing capacity, however, choose the 2.8L DURAMAX® turbo-diesel engine that produces 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. This engine can pull a maximum of 7,700 pounds with a 2-wheel drivetrain (2WD) and 7,600 pounds with a 4-wheel drivetrain (4WD). This is enough strength to pull a small camper.

Keep in mind that if you drive the ZR2 trim, your towing capacity is maxed out at 5,000 pounds, regardless of which engine you use.

Chevy Colorado Towing: Driver-Assist Features

In addition to the engine, Trailering Package, and other hardware, the 2018 Colorado includes several driver-assist features to help making your towing experience more convenient. This includes an available Tow/Haul mode that adjusts the automatic transmission shift schedule to prevent "hunting" for gears while trailering.

When hitching up your trailer, the available Active Tow feature helps you align your hitch and your trailer by showing a single guiding line on your rear vision camera screen. Then, when you hit the road, the available Integrated Trailer Brake Controller keeps you in command by allowing the trailer's brakes to operate simultaneously with your truck's brakes.

If you begin to descend a hill while towing, you'll have a few different features on your side, depending on your engine. If you have the 2.8L turbo-diesel engine, the Exhaust Brake system will kick in to create back pressure in the engine, slow your vehicle, and reduce brake use.

This allows for less likelihood of brake fade and a potentially prolonged brake pad life. Auto Grade Braking is also available to help with steep descents. This feature works with cruise control to maintain your vehicle's speed on long, steep grades.
